SOUTH EASTERN LAWYERS FOR EQUITY AND GOOD GOVERNANCE.

A COMMUNIQUÉ:

In a communiqué issued at the end of a general meeting of the South Eastern Lawyers For Equity & Good Governance held in Umuahia, the capital city of Abia State on the 1st of August 2023, we resolved as follows:

That the South Eastern Lawyers for Equity & Good Governance unanimously support the Federal Government ably led by the President and Commander in Chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR on his decision of removing fuel subsidy in Nigeria, which is for the overall interest of the nation.

In the light of our unanimous support and confidence in Mr. President over subsidy removal, we urge Mr. President to do the following in other cushion the effects of the fuel subsidy removal:

To reduce the fuel pump price to an affordable rate.

To fix the refineries and make them functional.

To work in collaboration with the Labour Unions and introduce a new national minimum wage for workers and immediately, implement same.

To make provision for CMG buses for the purpose of transportation across the 36 (thirty-six) states including Federal Capital Territory and the 774 (seven hundred and seventy-four) local government areas in Nigeria at much affordable rate.

To fulfill his promises of ordering the release of 200,000 metric tons of grain from strategic reserves to households across the 36 (thirty-six) states and Federal Capital Territory to moderate prices and provide 225,000 metric tons of fertilizers, seedlings and other input to farmers across the nation.

To ensure that food prices remain affordable by collaborating with all major stake holders in ensuring food security in the country.

Against the backdrop, we call on the leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress as a matter of urgency, suspend the planned industrial action and/or protest, in the best interest of the poor mases of Nigeria and instead, embrace continual dialogue with the federal Government as what we experience today in Nigeria is a temporary hardship.

We hereby unanimously condemn the planned industrial action and/or protest and allow Mr. President implement his agenda.
